Welcome to the Tyne Observer
A new independent source of news for Newcastle—delivered to your inbox
Welcome to the Tyne Observer, a new, independent publication dedicated to thoughtful, long-form, and investigative reporting on Newcastle's people, politics, culture, and history.
The aim is to provide local news that you actually enjoy reading. Rather than simply rewriting council press releases, our goal is to tell the story of our city in a new light.
Unfortunately, the state of local news in Newcastle mirrors a national trend; over time, historic local papers have been swallowed up by massive commercial conglomerates. Today, over half of the UK’s local newspapers are owned by just three companies.
Here in the North East, the situation is particularly stark—every single major local paper is owned by one of those three corporate giants. When profit margins take precedence over public utility, good journalism falls by the wayside.
But there is a better way. A growing movement of independent, reader-supported publications—like Manchester's The Mill, Sheffield's The Tribune, and The Bristol Cable—have proven the viability of grassroots journalism. We are following in their footsteps to build a publication sustained by direct reader support.
We are soft-launching for now; the publishing cadence of new articles will vary as we find our rhythm. However, we have several great pieces in the pipeline, so stay tuned.
If you sign up, you’ll receive every new article straight to your email inbox. We will never send you ads or share your email with third parties, and if you change your mind, you can unsubscribe at any time.
If you prefer not to receive emails, you can simply visit the site (for the technically inclined, we also offer full-content RSS). Because we don’t run any programmatic ads, your reading experience is up to you. News should adapt to meet your needs, not the other way around.
If you read an article, idea, or topic you like, please share it with your friends, family, and colleagues. Our future depends on your support.
Got a story idea, a tip, or want to say hello? You can reach us any time by replying directly to our newsletters, commenting on our site, or emailing us at [email protected].
